The
Chinese fishermen used a variety of different techniques and equipment
to fish depending on their location on the bay. They caught a
wide variety of fish including cod, halibut, flounder, yellowtail,
king fish, and sardines.
On
the more rocky areas, they primarily used lines with hooks to
fish because the rocks made it difficult to use nets. They used
salted sardines on their hooks as bait. The salt was used to keep
the sardines from falling apart.
Around
less rocky areas, they used gill nets. They are called gill nets
because fish get their gills caught in the net. These gill nets
had floats on the top and weights on the bottom to create a wall
of net for fish to swim into. They used baskets to keep the lines
and nets from tangling. Sometimes they would scare the fish into
the net by floating a boat to one side of the net, and throw a
long pole deep into the water at such an angle, that the pole
would shoot back out of the water. When the net was full they
would pull it up to the shore and collect the fish.

They
dried most of the fish they caught using salt, and
laying them out in the sun. Sometimes they would
put the fish in jars with oil. This would keep the
fish up to six months without rotting. |
